"Lily's Orchid" by Fran Seikaly Artist Statement - I have been an art teacher for many years.I attended art schools, but was never introduced to pastels. So, a year and a half ago I bought some pastels and started playing with them. I entered the second and third pastels I created in a juried show at CCS and they both sold. I attended 2 workshops and a class to learn more about pastels. Early this year I entered a pastel of an orchid (see picture) that I had done as a commission for a client into the Michigan Fine Arts Competition and it was juried in. 600 pieces of fine art from across the state were submitted and 125 were picked for the competition. It was like the Oscar nominee's, "It's just an honor to be nominated." I will continue to teach, learn and create with pastels. Working with them reminds me of being a child and coloring with crayons: it's immediate, satisfying and above all - FUN ! ! !
